Job Purpose:
For the Pittsburgh Sustainable Design Lead position, we are looking for a proactive and proven leader with extensive knowledge and at least 7 years of relevant experience in areas such as LEED certification, WELL certification, net zero energy, low embodied carbon, circular design, biophilic design, regenerative systems, and social impact frameworks. The candidate must possess a strong understanding of sustainability ratings systems and comprehensive sustainable design strategies, as well as bring an established skill in a related specialist area.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide project management and strategic sustainability leadership on multiple building scale and masterplan projects, leading the work and delegating support internally.
- Coordinate with multiple disciplines in complex built environment projects.
- Advise clients on green building technology and ratings systems (LEED, WELL, Fitwel, Passive House, Living Building Challenge) and deliver successful certification according to client goals.
- Take an integrated design approach for modeling and analysis of energy, water, waste, carbon, health and related metrics.
- Partner with key Pittsburgh business development leadership staff to expand our Pittsburgh portfolio of sustainable projects and sustainability thought leadership reputation.
- Create powerful storytelling collateral in the form of client memos, reports and graphic-driven presentations.
- Develop and present in-person, hybrid and virtual client meetings and multidiscipline design workshops.
- Grow and lead Pittsburgh sustainable design team
Candidate Interests and Skills:
As an experienced Sustainable Design Lead, it is expected that you can demonstrate the following:
- Sustainability assessment system qualifications (e.g., LEED, ILFI, WELL, Fitwel) and evidence of experience managing multiple projects' pursuit of a certification from start to finish, including familiarity with documentation portals such as LEED Online
- Ability to manage multiple simultaneous and overlapping tasks and projects successfully
- Experience working as part of multidisciplinary teams (including, but not limited to attending meetings with architects, planners, engineers, government agencies and clients)
- Experience in sustainable design techniques, frameworks, standards, analysis or modelling relevant to the built environment
- Strategic approach to leading and delegating environmental/energy/water/waste system analysis and the development of suitable strategies for deployment
- Authentic and purpose driven leader capable of managing and growing a technical sustainability team
- Strong quantitative and problem-solving skills and skilled in working with data sets
- Self-motivated and able to work independently
- Comfort interfacing with clients and senior management
Qualifications:
- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Environmental, Mechanical, Civil Engineering, Sustainability Management, Urban Planning, or a related subject
- Minimum 7 years' experience in a sustainability-related field
- Expertise in LEED, WELL, ILFI and other rating systems
- LEED AP or similar third party credentialed accreditation is required
Software and Technologies:
- Strong experience in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Bluebeam
- Knowledgeable in embodied carbon software such as Tally, EC3, One Click LCA
- Knowledgeable in energy modelling software such as IES, EnergyPlus ETC.
- Familiarity with Adobe CS, Illustrator, and InDesign
