The Role:
The firm is seeking a Senior Tunnel Engineer with expertise in structural and/or geotechnical engineering to support their expanding Tunnel Business Unit. This role is ideal for a motivated, detail-oriented professional with a passion for growth and a collaborative spirit. Responsibilities include assisting with business development, overseeing project management, and leading staff for tunnel design, inspection, and construction management.
Based in the Sterling, VA office, this position may involve travel to project sites and client offices in Washington, D.C., and Northern VA. Remote work is possible depending on project needs.
Job Responsibilities:
- Lead the planning, management, and execution of tunnel and underground design projects.
- Oversee all aspects of tunnel projects, including scope, schedule, budget, and client relations.
- Guide multidisciplinary teams across various locations throughout the design process.
- Perform or supervise geotechnical and tunnel structural design analyses.
- Develop designs for tunnels, shafts, excavation support, and other underground structures, including preparing calculations, reports, plans, and specifications.
- Prepare proposals, including writing narratives, estimating work hours, and coordinating with clients.
- Mentor and train junior engineers.
- Support marketing and business development nationwide. Experience in business development and involvement in professional organizations is a plus.
Required Skills/Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution (Master's Degree preferred).
- Licensed Professional Engineer with the ability to obtain licensure in other states through reciprocity.
- At least 15 years of experience in tunnel engineering, with strong project management skills and hands-on experience in tunnel and underground construction. Exceptional candidates with less experience may be considered.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD is required. Familiarity with MathCAD, STAAD, SAP, RISA, RSA, GeoStudio, Plaxis, FLAC, and Revit is a plus but not mandatory. Willingness to learn these tools is important.
- Willingness to travel for projects, conferences, and meetings, up to 20%.
- Ability to work on construction sites, including underground spaces, slopes, shafts, rough terrain, and remote locations.

- Ability to pass background checks, including criminal history, motor vehicle record, and credit check.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test.
- U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Resident status required; no visa sponsorship available.
- Must pass a government security investigation and meet requirements for access to classified information.
